General Discussion

Good Evening; My name is Barbara Hunter and I was raised in Cherry Hill. My mother brought me and my younger sister to the neighborhood in 1965. My sister moved out decades ago, but my mother and I lived in the same townhouse for 56.5 years. I attended #160 - Carter J. Woodson Elementary and Cherry Hill Junior High. My father was barber at a barbershop on the opposite side of the shopping center. My mother, sister, and I went to First Baptist Church of Cherry Hill. My mother a devote Southern Baptist was also a member of the pastor's aid. My sister became an usher there too. In fact, my paternal grandfather was a deacon.

Although I no longer live in Cherry Hill, I still think about it often. The old A&P grocery, the children's shoe store, the hardware store, and the indoor swimming pool up at Giles Road - all of these places and more fill my memories. I have not forgotten many of the people, both good and bad, that I met in Cherry Hill. One thing that stands out in my mind is the fact that my mother worked as a cafeteria lady at most of the schools out there. I worked along side of her at #160 in the cafeteria and got to see 2 of the teachers I used to be a student of. But my mother has long since retired, but I chose another career path.

My mother and I left the neighborhood last November. My younger sister, Doreen, died last June. My father and paternal grandfather have long since passed away. I deeply miss Cherry Hill.
